Social Media?

Recently, I decided to increase my micro blogging presence. Twitter provides such a unique opportunity to connect with anyone out there. Back when twitter was new, I posted my first tweet in April of 2008 @artdc. Find that tweet here. At that point, my account didn’t get much use! Shame on me for lost time!

A few months ago I realized the value twitter, and began to build a useful profile! With a wider reach,  it was necessary to separate my art and personal profiles. I felt it was confusing to mix too many layers of conversation in one place. So I started @theJesseCohen to talk a bit more about my personal and science interests. I find it to be both shocking and exciting to broadcast information, and then receive a response. There is a new personal layer of communication that has been developing. We are moving beyond the connection of a landing page and comments. I’m glad to be on board with a new level of understanding.

Links to other JC’s out there?

In 2012, I posted an idea. I’d love to network with more people that have the same name. So if you are another Jesse Cohen, and have a website, drop me a line, and I can start a new page on this site with a links to other Jesse Cohens. Please send only personal pages. We can make the web just a bit more connected. Click the contact link above to drop me a note.

A close to the year.

It has been an amazing year.  With the new transition from Science to Business I’ve had a lot to do.  I have a new appreciation for the retail world and the business behind art.  I’m thankful to those who’ve supported my move and the development of my new shop with L’Eclat de Verre.  The new shop is growing which is quite exciting and time consuming.

There are a lot of kettle’s in the fire.  More to come on that.  But for the moment, we/I need to get some more posts up on this site.   There’s potential in the discussion of business development, our products, but then that’s not personal enough for a self-titled blog.  This isn’t just another marketing engine.  Nor did I ever want this to be a place holder.  It’s not just about resumes.

I’m still interested in developing a resource so that other JC’s can find each other or those who are looking for someone else with the same name can find them.  This year has been one where I’ve received a bunch of emails for another Jesse Cohen.

If you’d like a link to a personal web site of other  Jesse Cohen’s out there, drop me a line here.

2012

The year is off to a good start. Well, really were’e into it, but that’s a good thing. No response yet from other Jesse Cohen’s out there, I’m still interested in networking with all of you, and providing some links to your sites incase folks are looking for you.  The internet is small enough.

This year, my personal focus is on art and business development.  I’m excited about my current work, and it’s a pleasure to spend my days focusing on creative entrepreneurial activities.

2011 and 2012 have been great for a bit of press attention.  Find those articles here:

July 26, 2011 – GALO Magazine, “The Man Behind The Movement
September 12, 2011 – The Chevy Chase Patch, “Artist Spotlight: Jesse Cohen
December 22, 2011 – The Washington Post, “‘Petri Dish’ exhibit riffs on scientific themes with diverse media
January 19, 2012 – The Gazette, “The Art of Networking
Find a more complete press listing in the about page above.

It’s my goal to keep pushing forward.  The story will continue to grow.

Who?

Often, I’m sure people find this site and wonder who is this Jesse Cohen.  Years ago when I started this site, I only knew of a few people in the U.S. with this name.  Over the past few years, I’ve seen my name pop up more often.  There are interesting individuals out there with a varying level of success in different careers.  From artists to actors to doctors and lawyers.  It does excite me and complicate things a little to see other artists with the same name.  For a while, locally, there was another photographer with the name Jesse Cohen.  She had an amazing job working for the National Zoo.  I never had the opportunity to meet her, but every time I visit a major local photography shop, people have a lot to say about her.

This particular Jesse Cohen is an artist and a scientist.  I have a research career in the Bio-Tech world with over 10 years of experience.  I’ve worked in a variety of labs from developing drugs, drug targets, and measuring gene expression.  After a great deal of focus, energy and fight, I decided to make a change.  Anyone out there who’s worked in the research field is familiar with the pitfalls of grant-funded contract jobs, and the the idea that your job stability relies on the ability to answer a question which may be unanswerable no matter how much time, energy, and fight you apply!  My thoughts go out to grad students and new academics working to create a name for themselves. I now work full time in the art world.

While working in research, in 2004 I started an organization with the help of a small advisory board which evolved from a post on the web by Antoinette Wysocki.  In 2005 we collaboratively opened a studio deep in a dark neighborhood in the city which ended in 2010.  We held our first popup gallery at another location the same year which would develop a unique series of events and web activity.  In 2009 we started an art gallery.

You can read about this progress here, and another profile which relates more to my progress as an artist here.

I have always had the goal to develop this website further as a more active reference for my opinions about the world around me from art to research and beyond.  However, with a million and one things happening at all times, this site gets less attention than it deserves.  You’ll see that in my history of annual posts that claim to bring more energy here.  I mean obviously the world wants to hear more than my intermittent resume posts.

The other day, it hit me, there’s a valuable direction that this site could provide in addition to a resume stomping ground.  With all of the Jesse Cohen’s out there, from many of which I receive email.  I would like to know who you all are, and what you do.  I’m sure many of you have websites, so I’d like to propose an experiment.  If you read this site, if you have your own page, drop me an email through the contact page.  Let me know who you are, where you are, what you do, how you can be contacted via email, and a link to your site.  I’d like to compile a Directory of links to other people with the same name.  If there’s enough interest, I can make that happen on this site.  That said, I’m only interested in personal pages.  Let’s not make this a business directory.  I will ignore links or messages from people that don’t suit this exact plan for a page of links to personal pages of individuals with the same name.

If this happens, you’ll see a new link eventually at the top leading to a page of links and brief info…

2010

This post is long overdue, a year in the making. Since starting the blog version of this site, jessecohen.com a tremendous number of events have occurred in my business, professional, and personal life! From getting married, to starting a gallery and curating or organizing over 14 art shows in the past year, it has been a busy and exciting time.

In my professional life, I’m working in a new lab in Georgetown University while I’m learning new techniques like micro-arrays which will provide useful data about a number of important pathways in the direction of our research.

In my business life, I’ve blogged with an effort to increase awareness of DC area art on artdc.com while I pushed the limits of the artdc community on artdc.org .  As always I’m really pleased to see a cohesive nature budding in the DC area art scene, which was part of our goal when we started artdc.org.  My thoughts go out to all of the artists who showed up to that first meeting at Teaism in March of 2004.  We’ve done things that I never knew were possible, from starting a gallery to working with developers to do pop-up exhibitions and developing face-to-face relationships that started on the internet.  We’ve developed a powerful tool, we look forward to taking it to new places.

new work at artdc.com

There’s a new collector’s pick up at artdc.com. If you’re an art collector or have an interest in becoming one, This new painting is a wonderful way to start.  Matt Sesow is in it to stay, and he’s an incredible artist moving forward at a fast pace.   He produces a great deal of work.  He paints so much, that we heard he had to remove his dishwasher so he could have more storage room for art!!!

artdc.com

artdc.com has started a new program which will select individual works of art for collectors to buy. The art is top notch, and I hope to see these selected artists do amazing things though out their careers. Stop by artdc.com to read more about this project. The first artist selected is Nils Henrik Sundqvist the founder of Art Outlet.
